Three definitions, three questions
"Sateen" describes the weaving; "100% cotton" describes the fiber composition; "500" is usually shown as thread count. Each figure answers a different question. Sateen is not a type of cotton plant.
Check the counting unit and the manufacturer's reporting method. Do not conclude from the number that the cotton is Egyptian, combed or long fiber, and it does not mean that the bedding is sewn from two layers of fabric.
What do you like about the touch of sateen?
A sateen weave tends to create a smooth surface and a subtle sheen. This can be a pleasant choice for those who like a flowing and soft look. There are also those who prefer the matte look and crisp touch of percale.
You should check both weaves with the same type of fiber and also check weight and sewing. A smooth feeling in the store is not a substitute for clear care instructions and suitable measurements.

500 is no guarantee of cooling
A high thread count does not guarantee more ventilation, more durability or all-season fit. The feeling of heat is affected by the complete fabric, the blanket, the mattress and the room conditions.
Promises to reduce wrinkles in the skin, to treat dryness or to restore hair also require separate evidence. The type of weaving and the number of threads alone do not prove such an effect.
What to check before paying more
Find out the complete composition, the source documentation if it is cotton that is shown as special, the measurements of each part and washing instructions. Check the closure, the elastic and the seams. The "made in Israel" marking should also refer to the product you have chosen and not to a discount regarding the entire brand.
Compare to a set with a clear specification even if the number of threads in it is lower. It is better to choose a product that suits your touch and care habits than to pay for a number that you cannot understand how it is measured.
How do you check two offers that look the same?
Write side by side the dimensions of the sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases in each offer. Then add the complete composition, country of manufacture if specified, type of weaving and care instructions. One of the sets may include a deeper sheet or two additional pillowcases, so the price difference has nothing to do with the 500 number.
If the figure 500 appears without an area unit or explanation, ask for clarification regarding the counting method. Do not try to deduce an exact number from a close-up photo of the fabric. For a practical choice, it is also important to touch both sides, check the closure of the duvet cover and see if the decorative finish is in a place that may disturb sleep.
What do you check after the first wash?
Before washing, take a picture of the label and save the order details. After treatment according to the instructions, put the set on the same bed and check fit, contact and seams. If there has been a change, an accurate description of it is more helpful than a general impression that the bedding is no longer as in the package. For example: a corner that does not reach under the mattress or a closure that extends abnormally.
Store softness does not guarantee that the touch will remain the same after washing, but a change in feel alone does not prove a defect either. Decide in advance what is important to you over time: a smooth surface, ease of drying or a neat appearance. There is no point in paying extra for a figure that does not help you choose between the products that really fit your bed and your routine.
