Three definitions, three questions
"Sateen" describes the weaving; "100% cotton" describes the fiber composition; "500" is usually shown as thread count. Each figure answers a different question. Sateen is not a type of cotton plant.
Check the counting unit and the manufacturer's reporting method. Do not conclude from the number that the cotton is Egyptian, combed or long fiber, and it does not mean that the bedding is sewn from two layers of fabric.
What do you like about the touch of sateen?

What do you check after the first wash?

If there has been a change, an accurate description of it is more helpful than a general impression that the bedding is no longer as in the package. Store softness does not guarantee that the touch will remain the same after washing, but a change in feel alone does not prove a defect either.
